The 2024 Emmy Awards were historic. Access Hollywood is breaking down the top moments of the night from Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s PDA-filled moments to Shogun making history. Hosts Eugene Levy and Dan Levy kicked off television’s biggest night with a hilarious opening monologue, calling out their sweet father-son dynamic and giving a shout-out to their beloved show Schitt’s Creek.

I’ve played a lot of dads in my day. Yes, I was a dad in American Pie, I was a dad in Finding Dory, and our show, Schitt’s Creek.

Sure.

But without question, my most rewarding dad role ever has been being your dad in Schitt’s Creek.

Later in the night, the two reunited with their on-screen family, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy. It was a date night for Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco. The Only Murders in the Building star brought her music producer boyfriend as her plus-one to the show, and the singer couldn’t keep her hands to herself. In one snap, Benny put his hand on her thigh, and in another shot, she playfully sits on his lap, and the two looked so in love as he gave her a kiss on the cheek. Sel also made a playful swipe at Donald Trump’s vice president pick JD Vance for his infamous childless cat lady comment, while on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Let me say what an honor it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.

And she wasn’t the only one to call out JD Vance on stage. Candace Bergen made a catty joke too.

My character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother. Oh, how far we’ve come. Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids. So, as they say, my work here is done. Meow.

John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight when the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, and his speech took a memorable turn when he got played off stage as he was paying tribute to his family’s deceased dog.

We had the most fantastic dog, and she was at our wedding and she got us through a pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies. Perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to her and (censored)

But before Oliver walked off the stage, he had a playful message for the audience.

This isn’t just for her. This is for all dogs. All dogs. You’re all very good girls. You’re very good boys. You all deserve a treat. Play me off now.

Shogun made history at the 2024 Emmy Awards. Before the show even started, it won a record-shattering 14 awards at the Creative Arts ceremony, the most ever for a single season of any show. During the Primetime Emmys, it took home four additional awards, including best drama, and the show’s two leads also made history. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai became the first Japanese actor and actress to win best actor in a drama series and best actress in a drama series. Anna was visibly moved when her name was called out and gave an emotional speech on stage.

I was crying before my name was announced. I’m a mess today. Thank you to the Academy for naming me alongside my fellow nominees whose work I grew up watching and love.

It was also a big night for Baby Reindeer who took home four Emmys, including best limited or anthology series, best supporting actress limited or anthology series for Jessica Gunning. And Richard Gadd took home two Emmy Awards for his work on the hit Netflix show. While accepting the award for writing for a limited or anthology series or movie, he gave a passionate speech encouraging people to never give up.

10 years ago, I was down and out, right? I never ever thought I’d get my life together. I never ever thought I’d be able to rectify myself with what had happened to me and get myself back on my feet again. And then here I am, just over a decade later, picking up one of the biggest writing awards in television. Yeah? Now, I don’t mean that to sound arrogant. I mean it as encouragement for anyone who’s going through a difficult time right now to persevere. Yeah? I don’t know much about this life, I don’t know why we’re here, none of that. But I do know that nothing lasts forever.

It was also a big night for The Bear who took home four Emmy Awards, including best actor and supporting actor. Liza Colon-Zayas also took home her first Emmy win for best supporting actress in a comedy series and encouraged Latinas to head out to vote in the presidential election.

And to all the Latinas who looking at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights.

But in a turn of events, audiences were shocked when Catherine O’Hara announced Hacks beat The Bear for best comedy series.
