Stadium collapse at stadium in Colombia kills at least 6 Transcript
Layron Livingstone: (00:00) With this catastrophic collapse in Columbia, at least four people killed, dozens more injured when part of a stadium right there, just suddenly gives way. Fans were in the wooden stands watching a bull fight when that disaster hit. Salena Sabovic: (00:13) And tonight we're hearing from someone who lived through that terrifying ordeal. Local 10's Cody Weddle reports from Bogota. Cody Weddle: (00:20) Well, one of the most important annual events for this Columbian small town, it's meant as a family affair, but it ended today in tragedy. These are the terrifying images seen around the world tonight, as up to six sections of bleachers collapse at a bull ring in the central Columbian town of Espinal. At least six people are dead and 200 injured. Aerial footage shows the stands, which already appeared rickety, falling into the ring as people on both sides, scramble to avoid being crushed. And images taken after crowds evacuated, the stands appeared to have fallen over like match sticks. Cody Weddle: (00:58) Ivan Ferney is a city Councilman in the town and was one block away when the stands collapsed. Saying, "I heard a breaking sound of the bamboo and wood when it started to crack, that's what I heard. Then the screams," he says. Ferney explaining that the temporary stands are constructed annually five days before the event, inspected and then dismantled. Saying, "This is something that has never happened. The stands are always inspected before people go in." And Columbian leaders reacting today. President Ivan Duque promising a full investigation. President elect Gustavo Petro meanwhile, who has been vocal in his opposition to bull fighting, encouraging mayors to prohibit future events. We're reporting this from the capital Bogota. I'm Cody Weddle, for Local 10 News.
