Tonight, we’re following a developing story out of Memphis, Tennessee. There is growing outraged after a black man died after a confrontation with police.

Speaker 2 (00:07):

The fired officers are black. Tonight for the first time, we’re hearing some of the police audio from the arrest. CBS News, Dick Brennan joins us from the newsroom with the details. Dick.

Speaker 3 (00:19):

Kristine and Maurice, an internal police probe already determined that the five Memphis officers in the case used excessive force and that they failed to render aid to the victim. And now there are three separate investigations going on, federal, state, and local.

Speaker 4 (00:33):

We’re on foot pursuit, southbound on Ross.

Speaker 3 (00:37):

We’re hearing dispatch audio from the night Memphis Police arrested 29-year-old Tyre Nichols. Officers say two confrontations took place following a traffic stop on January 7th

Speaker 5 (00:46):

At Ross and Castlegate Lane. He’s fighting at this time.

Speaker 3 (00:50):

Nichols shown here in the hospital died days later, residents at a city council hearing say they want to see police video of the arrest.

Speaker 6 (00:57):

It could have been your son, Ms. Logan. It could have been you, Edmond Ford. [inaudible 00:01:02].

Nichols’ family was shown the tape on Monday.

Speaker 8 (01:08):

What I saw was something that should happen to no human being, black, white, or indifferent. I saw police brutality at its finest.

Speaker 3 (01:19):

Tyre’s mother described him as a beautiful soul who loves skateboarding and sunsets. He was on a break from work when he was pulled over by the police.

Speaker 9 (01:27):

Where’s the humanity in all of this? You just beat him like a dog in the street.

Speaker 3 (01:33):

The five officers involved, who were all black, have been fired.

Speaker 10 (01:37):

This black man died at the hands of other black men that were wearing blue. Blue is the only color that matters here.

Speaker 3 (01:45):

Memphis City Council Chair, Martavia Jones is concerned about what could happen next.

Speaker 10 (01:50):

I see us having our hands on a combustible can, and we are trying to keep it contained for as long as we can.

Speaker 3 (02:01):

Authorities say they could release the arrest video sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 11 (02:05):

Our federal investigation may take some time. These things often do. But we will be diligent and we will make decisions based on the facts and the law.

Speaker 3 (02:17):

Two EMTs who responded to the incident were suspended. The funeral for Tyre Nichols will be held next week. Kritine.
