What are open captions?
Open captions, also known as burned-in, baked on or hard-coded captions, are seen by everyone who watches the video. Open captions are a permanent feature on the video and can’t be turned on and off since they’re encoded into the picture.
How do Rev’s open captions work?
- Upload file(s) to checkout and select “Burned-In Captions” add-on.
- After you place your order you will be directed to the receipt page.
- Once the caption order is complete, you will receive a link to download your burned-in videos. These links are live for 7 days.
- You can re-download burned-in videos from the download modal for any caption or subtitle order where the burned-in add-on was ordered.
How long does it take to generate a video with open captions?
The burned-in video will not be downloaded instantaneously like the other caption output formats; instead, you will be notified via email once your burned-in video is ready, which takes roughly one-fifth of the length of the video (i.e. a 10-minute video may take about 2 minutes to burn the captions in).
What are the default styling settings for open captions?
Noto Sans, white font color with 50% opacity black wrapped background; font size is determined based on the dimensions of the video.
Can you customize your open captions (e.g. font type, size, color, etc.)?
- Text: Font Type, Font Size, Bold, Italics, Font Color
- Font Types*: Arial, Futura, Helvetica Neue, Lucida Grande, Roboto, STIXGeneral, Tahoma, Times New Roman, Verdana, Open Sans, Tiresias, Noto
- Font color palette: display 3 default color options (Black, White, Yellow) with a hex value input field for users who want to a specific color
How do open captions preferences work?
Burned-in Captions Customization preferences can be found under Order Preferences > Caption Settings. When you edit open caption customization options, a customization modal appears with the call to action to SAVE preferences to the user's account.
What is the quality of burned-in video users will receive?
Rev will generate a high quality video with burned-in captions. We store the original media that you upload and create captions to match this media file as best we can: we'll try to return a file with the same encoding, bitrate, size, and dimensions. We accept all video formats at checkout but deliver an mp4 file format for burned-in videos.
